Welcome to The Southend Pier Museum is located in the old Pier Workshops underneath the train station at the shore end of Southend Pier, United Kingdom. Visitors will need to enter the station to find the Pier Museum entrance. The Southend Pier Museum is open to the public from early May to late October each year on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.
A small admission charge is made but children under the age of 12 years are admitted free if accompanied by an adult. All proceeds from the sale of tickets and souvenirs are used for improvements to the Museum, its exhibits and displays. A visit to the Southend Pier Museum, Southend-on-Sea, will be of special interest to schools and arrangements can be made for visits outside of normal opening hours and during some winter months. The Piers history is boldly displayed for public benefit and is both educational and entertaining. Exhibits include many items of memorabilia such as an original restored working Pier signal box, a restored ex-Pier Toasts Rack tram circa 1890 and train carriages circa 1949 and extensive informative pictorial displays featuring the Pier from 1830. At the Southend Museum there is also a small collection of working antique penny slot machines and much more. The Southend Pier is a major landmark in Southend-on-Sea. Extending 2,158 m (1.341 miles) into the Thames Estuary, it is the longest pleasure pier in the world. Sir John Betjeman once said that "the Pier is Southend, Southend is the Pier".
