This is one of the most popular resorts on the sunny KwaZulu Natal South Coast, famous for its strelitzia (bird of paradise) flowers. A lighthouse was built in 1892 to mark the shoal, but was eventually moved to Port Shepstone. The village soon became a thriving resort and trading centre as it is today.
