Gambia's capital city, Banjul, is a uniquely African experience, with a vibrant streetside culture. The coastal district has geared up in a big way for tourism and now attracts package holiday makers from Europe.
Perhaps the Gambia's main claim to fame is that it is to here that American author Alex Haley traced his Roots. Today in the village of Juffure on the north bank of the Gambia River, you can visit what is claimed to be the original home of Haley's great, great grandfather, Kunta Kinte. Nearby is the former trading station at Albreda where legend has it that escaped slaves who managed to reach its flagpole were granted the status of free men.
Another highlight is undoubtedly the sacred crocodile pool at Fajara. According to local myth infertile women are able to get pregnant after visiting the place! Also on the agenda is a visit to the Wassu stone circles which date from AD 500 to AD 1000. Little is known about the ancient African culture who built these structures.
