Cavtat

Cavtat is a town in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County of Croatia. It is on the Adriatic seacoast 15 km south of Dubrovnik and is the center of the Konavle municipality. The English language pronunciation is "TSOF-tot."

It was a Greek colony known as Epidaurum, which in 228 BC came under Roman rule becoming later Roman colonia. Following the invasion of Slavs, the inhabitants of the city established Ragusa in the better protected place nearby in 614. Slavic Cavtat belonged to Travunia. It was bought from duke R. Pavlovic by the Republic of Ragusa in 1426 sharing its fate thenceforward.
