Lithuania became the first of the Soviet republics to declare its independence from the USSR and it has since been smartening up its image. Capital city, Vilnius, has seen its grand old baroque buildings artfully renovated. The Old Town is the largest in Eastern Europe is being mooted as the 'New Prague'. The Baltic Sea beaches are a summer holiday haven. Towards the south you find the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO Heritage site. It is a wide sandy spot fringed by forest and desert-like sand dunes crowded onto a two-and-a-half mile wide peninsula ending in a fence at the Russian border.
