Welcome to Grand Haven, one of Michigan's featured Beachtowns and a renaissance city that has become a beacon for those looking for simplicity in a scene of natural beauty. From its roots as a highly commercial port-of-call for ferries and passenger liners, Grand Haven has evolved to become a place of serene, family enjoyment, hosting lively outdoor recreation, a thriving downtown, history, culture and festivals on the shores of Lake Michigan and the Grand River. Grand Haven is situated on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan in northern Ottawa County. It was given its name in 1835 due to its location at the mouth of the Grand River. At that time, Rix Robinson had just built a trading post there. He and others, including the Rev.William Ferry, Robert Stuart, (now considered to be the town fathers), formed the New Haven Company to develop the area.
And develop it did! Grand Haven has grown today into a major metropolitan area, with many diverse businesses. And it has retained its picturesque atmosphere as one of the jewels on the Great Lakes, with its scenic dunes, channel, waterfront and lighthouse at the State Park. One can walk along the waterfront from downtown, (where the musical fountain can be viewed at dusk Memorial Day through Labor Day), all the way to the lighthouse. The shopping is great too, both along main street as well as the waterfront, including the renovated Story & Clark Piano Building. Grand Haven is truly an experience waiting to happen to someone! Why not you?
